All India Motor Transport Association has ended their eight-day strike after a meeting with the government resulted in an agreement that most of their demands would be considered.  The strike, which began on June 20, 2018, demanded reduced diesel prices by bringing the fuel under the Goods and Services Tax (GST).  The Indian truckers also had concerns regarding insurance premium costs, toll collection systems, and contracts for direct port delivery services.

Nitin Gadkari, Minister for Road Transport and Highways, stated “All India Motor Congress’s decision to end the strike is commendable.  They have withdrawn their strike, following the government’s appeal.  Government is sensitive to the demands of transporters.  We had already accepted many demands.  We have constituted a high-level committee to discuss the remaining demands.”  The committee of Ministry officials and representatives of transporters will work to prevent such a situation in the future.

The strike impacted supply chains across the country, including e-commerce, fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), and the automobile industry, as well as the supply of cotton, grains, and spices.
