Announced on May 1st, 98% of the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference (TCRC) workers, employed at Canadian National Railway (CN) and Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC), have voted to strike as early as May 22, according to the union.
The railways, critical to Canada’s economy, have contracts covering locomotive engineers, conductors, and yard workers that expired on Dec. 31, 2023. Negotiations are ongoing, with the union president stating that the companies are seeking to remove critical safety provisions related to rest. CN and CPKC have stated their positions, with CN emphasizing the union’s focus on numerous local and regional demands rather than moving towards a more modern agreement. CPKC has highlighted its proposals for rest, salaries, and work-life balance, stating that they comply with Canadian regulations and do not compromise safety.
The potential strike, involving both major railways, could significantly impact bulk grain shipping. The West Coast ports of Vancouver and Prince Rupert would particularly feel the effects due to their heavy reliance on railroad transportation, compounding the industry setbacks.
